"Most of our election workers can only spare a few hours during the early voting period. I have a couple of workers who asked to be scheduled as much as possible. How will this affect their paycheck? Will we need to consider social security taxes?"

Must a county withhold social security tax from an election worker’s pay?

Generally, the answer is no. However, if the worker is employed through many elections during the tax year or works the entire early voting period for multiple elections, an election judge or clerk might earn enough to go over the threshold amount. In which case, the county would be required to withhold social security. To find the current Federal Insurance Contributions Act (FICA) tax exclusion amount for election officials and election workers, visit the Social Security Administration’s website.
