Push pins on calendar date squares "We got a PIA request yesterday. I’m trying to calculate the correct number of days we have to respond to the request, but there's a couple of holidays coming up that are confusing my count. How do I determine what is a business day?"

How does the Public Information Act define a "business day"?

The definition is in the Texas Government Code. Government Code §552.0031 defines a "business day" as a day other than a Saturday or Sunday, a national holiday or state holiday, the Friday before or Monday after a national holiday or state holiday if the holiday occurred on the weekend and is observed on that Friday or Monday, and an optional holiday if the public information officer observes the optional holiday. For more information on what qualifies as a nonbusiness day, see our publication Public Information Act.
