February is Heart Health Awareness Month
Heart disease cuts too many lives short. But here's the good news: There are simple steps you can take to nurture and protect your heart every day.
The flyer Caring for Your Heart provides key steps for members to protect their hearts every day:
1. Maintaining a healthy weight – Just a 10-pound weight loss can lower blood pressure and reduce strain on the heart.
2. Eating a healthy diet helps to reduce plaque that clogs arteries and blood vessels.
3. Adding 30 minutes of moderate aerobic activity five days per week helps your heart beat strongly, lowers stress and keeps off the extra weight.
4. Lowering your blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar levels (if high) helps reduce your risk for heart disease, heart attack and stroke.
Heart disease includes several types of conditions. The most common type of heart disease is coronary heart disease, which affects blood flow to the heart and can lead to heart attack. You can lower your risk for heart disease, heart attack and stroke by understanding the risk factors and learning how to live a healthy lifestyle.
