Sen. Middleton Attends Legislative Breakfast Meeting
Sen. Mayes Middleton (R-Galveston) attended this week's Tuesday Morning Breakfast meeting to discuss Senate Bill 19, which would prohibit counties and other political subdivisions from using public funds to hire lobbyists or pay nonprofit associations that employ them.
Middleton said he was there to explain what his bill does and does not do, and that it would not prevent associations like the Texas Association of Counties from tracking legislation for its members or providing training and other services to county officials. Local officials would still be able to travel to Austin to provide information to legislators, testify before committees and advocate for local interests, Middleton said.
"We're not seeking to silence anyone," he said.
Those in attendance were able to ask the Senator questions about the legislation's impact on their ability to engage with lawmakers.
County officials thanked Middleton for attending the breakfast meeting and said they looked forward to continuing the dialogue on the potential local impact of SB 19.
SB 19 is one of more than 4,500 bills that have been introduced thus far this session. TAC continues to track legislation affecting county offices. Find them here.
