Blog: How to respond to spring storms
TAC RMP offers resources to support counties when severe weather strikes
Spring is fast approaching, and in Texas, that means a surge of thunderstorms — where lightning, tornadoes, hail, heavy rain and high winds can occur together. It’s a deadly and damaging combination that can wreak havoc on buildings, roofs, vehicles, electrical systems and more.
Texas Association of Counties Risk Management Services staff members help guide counties through the claims process after a storm hits to make sure they get the repairs they need.
“We monitor the weather, and when we know there’s been a storm, we’ll check in with the counties to see how they’re doing and see if they need any help or if they have any damages that might need a claim,” said Brett Anderson, Property and Auto Claims Program Supervisor for TAC RMP.
Counties can also begin the claims process on their own by filling out a form on the TAC website or even reaching out by email or phone if power is knocked out in a storm.
After filing a claim, Anderson encourages counties to take steps to prevent additional damage. Dry out places that have flooded, put tarps over damaged roofs, temporarily board up windows. “This will avoid costly secondary damages like, for instance, mold,” he said.
But Anderson said his best advice is to prepare for storms before they even hit, minimizing potential damage by taking actions such as regularly inspecting roofs and removing debris that may clog drains. Also, monitor the National Weather Service and be weather aware.
“Unfortunately, we are going to have storms, and we are going to have claims,” Anderson said. “That’s what we’re here to help [counties] with.”
