    Grant Opportunities

Rural Volunteer Fire Department Assistance Program (HB 2604), FY2024

The program assists volunteer fire departments (VFDs) with purchasing fire-fighting apparatus, equipment, and training. For the 2024-25 state budget, $22 million in grant funds are available each fiscal year, including an additional $5 million yearly to fund more truck requests. In addition, emergency grants are available on demand for apparatus and equipment damage and losses incurred while responding to a declared disaster. State grant funds are awarded at three funding meetings per year. Unfunded applications are rolled forward for consideration at the next funding meeting. In addition, VFDs are encouraged to apply for additional funding needs as they occur, with new funding applications due at least 30 days before the next funding meeting. For more on the next funding meeting, see the Texas Forest Service (TFS) website or contact the TFS.

As of Feb. 1, 2023, a new grant category will be available to reimburse VFDs for volunteer recruitment resources. Reimbursement equals 100% of actual costs but is capped at $3,000 per department. This pilot project aims to help rural volunteer fire departments bolster staffing and enhance community fire protection. Upon receipt of federal funding from the U.S. Forest Service, the grant opportunity will be available to eligible VFDs.
